daw.com - December 10

WOW - did that week ever go by fast.  But a great week it was.  We even got to see the music classes perform last night and it was wonderful.  I also chaperoned the choir last Friday to the St. Regis light festival and it was a spectacular sight to see.  The students really do a great job.

Next week will end our latest math unit on adding and subtracting of fractions.  I plan on giving the final assessment on Tuesday.  We will start the new unit when we return after winter break.

Speaking of winter break, if anyone is planning on leaving early, please send me a quick email.  This is just for planning and organization.  I do wish everyone a wonderful and peaceful break.

Today the math and writing assessments will go home.  As I mentioned earlier, students did not do well on the math assessment and I have already taken steps to continue with this teaching and learning throughout the next several units.

Our annual winter fest is on Thursday.  Hopefully everyone us ready and looks like it will be quite a celebration of this past semester.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Friday is a half day so please expect your students home earlier than normal.  If they are picked up please be at the school by 11:30 to pick them up.  The cafeteria and other services are not open on this day.

Friday is the World Air Toss finals and while the two competing teams have not been determined, we will all attend to cheer them on.  This will happen right after the leavers ceremony.

That is is for this year.  Have a wonderful holiday and use the time to unwind and be at peace.

daw.com - November 30

I had a great week with my Model United Nations students from the High School as they debated and, in most instances, had passed all the resolutions they worked so hard on.  We also completed our class debates this week and I was pleased with the outcomes.  Debating is a skill that is very high level and takes years of practice to become good at so I am pleased that we start it in grade 5.  There are two more debates in 5HD before the end of the year.

I have completed marking the final assessments for the end of unit 3 math.  Unfortunately, they showed me that there is still further work required.  No one in the class got the whole test correct and there were a mess of errors and misunderstandings all over the place.
What this means is that I will add this on to our math lessons for the next couple of units as I try to strengthen the students skills in multiplication and division.  I wish I could say it was a single area but it was so spread out that I will review and extend all areas of this.  One thing I can say for sure, there are a number of students in my room who have not yet mastered the basic multiplication facts up to 9 x 9.  This is something they can continue to rehearse until they have it memorized and internalized.  It will have a very positive affect on future mathematical learning.  Ou current math unit is addition and subtraction of fractions.

We are well underway with our reading and writing units on non-fiction.  For the reading section we are looking at how to tackle the more complex types of non-fiction writing.  How to look for problems/solutions, cause/effect, sequence/order and compare/contrast sections in the writing.  As this is very complex, it will take us many more weeks of learning to really see how this fits into our reading.

Our writing is taking us on the journey of writing an information article that teaches the reader something.  With this as the main focus, students have completed a plan, headings/sub-headings and sections and have started drafting their works.  This will continue for the rest of this term and then start up again in January upon return.  I have indicated that my expectation includes details and flow in writing.

I want to remind everyone that our grade 5 Winterfest is on December 13.  One part of this is the buffet lunch we have for the entire grade.  You should have received a letter about this with your part in supplying food for the buffet.  In case you did not, here is the breakdown.  If you last name starts with;
A-E - appetizers/breads
F-K - main courses
L-P - vegetables, potato, rice, pasta dishes
Q-U - dessert
V-Z - drinks (only juice boxes please.
Remember this is to serve about 15 students in grade 5 and should be easy to both serve and eat.  We will supply the plates and cutlery needed for the meal.  The meal starts at lunch time but there is time needed for set up to please plan on having the food here at school no later than 11:30am.  It is a fun time to celebrate all the wonderful successes of the first semester.

If anyone is planning on leaving early for Winter Break, please let me know ASAP.  We have a lot planned for the last week of school and I need this information to assist with my planning.  Thank-you in advance for this information.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  I will gladly set up a time for us to meet.

daw.com - November 9

Once again a week has passed and what a great week it was.  We had time with a storyteller, we had our final swim time to show off our skills and we are winding down the argumentative essay unit and the Globalization unit.

Please remember there are only 3 days next week - Monday to Wednesday.  Thursday is a school professional day and Friday is a school holiday.  The week after this I will be away with the High School Model United Nations club in Singapore where they are attending an MUN conference.  While not with the ES it is still something that I greatly enjoy.

This coming week will see the students spend two days preparing for their debate on whether or not globalization is a good thing.  We have already done some research on this topic and now it will be time to zero in on it and then debate the topic.  I can hardly wait.

We have also completed our first drafts of the Research Based Argumentative Essay and will see these finally published by Wednesday of next week.  So far things are moving well with this and there are some interesting essays being created.

Our math unit moved into division this week with a look at what remainders are and how they should actually be a part of the quotient.  We even found a way to represent this with both math manipulative and also in drawing/model form.  Next week we do the standard algorithm and also begin division of decimals.  We still have about 2 weeks of this unit left.

There are two community building activities going on in the ES right now - the Children of Madaifu Apple Sale and also the used clothing drive from the Roots and Shoots club.  If you are so inclined, I know the students would be grateful for any assistance you can offer.  The order form for the apples is linked here to this email and used clothing can be dropped off in the boxes at the entrance to the school and also thought the ES school.  Thanks in advance for your support.

That is it for this week.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.  I will gladly set up a time to meet with you.

daw.com - November 2

One development that has happened this week is finding an overall weakness is solving of word problems associated with the multiplication of decimals.  With this in mind, I have changed next week’s homework to include three problems each night that we will then go over as a class the next day.  If students need some help, please feel free to assist them.

In the same line of mathematics, it has become apparent that there are a lot of students in my room who have not yet internalized the basic multiplication facts.  We do work in this area daily but further work at home would really help out.  The best way for this is to get a multiplication table off of the internet and then orally say it every night for about 10 minutes.  After a couple of months of this all students will see a huge improvement in this area.  Here is a link to a great table.

Our Jedi Juggler did an outstanding job today in her performance.  Congratulations to Anica for all the time she has spent on this and the final outcome.  The performance was outstanding.

We had the chance to listen to a professional story teller this past Tuesday.  The stories and songs were from West Africa and were of great interest to the UES students.  I believe there is a night time parent meeting with him and if you are free, I would highly recommend him.

Next week sees the end to the swimming unit with a fun relay time on Tuesday.  I do hope students have learned a lot in their swimming time and I am glad they have this opportunity.

The middle school play is next Thurs-Sat and tickets are free.  It is usually a great performance and since all the students will be there next year, this is a great way to see what they could be up to for next year.

We had a time in the Design Lab this week and I was impressed with the ‘claws’ that some of the students ended up with.  It was a great introduction to the lab and will lead us into our next unit on Biomimicry.  Look for more in the coming weeks.

That is all for now, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

daw.com - October 26

I want to thank all the parents I met with over the last 10 days or so.  I hope the conference was meaningful and will help as we continue to move forward.  I am very proud of all you students  and feel lucky to have them in my class.

We have now completed the first steps in our writing a persuasive essay.  Students have learned how to collect evidence to prove their positions as well as have quotes, short anecdotes and use opposite opinions to help.  This last one is very difficult and I expect it will take much longer to really become proficient at it.

We are now about 2/3 complete our first book-club book called Pedro’s Journal.  While the subject matter is not the easiest, I have been stoked by how the students have attacked it and really learned more about the reading and the subject at the same time.  We have about 7 more days of this and along the way I am having them pretend they are Pedro writing home to his mom on a post card. I find it interesting to see what they deem important enough to write home about.

Out math unit is moving along at a very steady pace.  We are amidst the multiplication of 3 digit by 4 digit whole numbers and next week will move on to multi-digit whole number division next week.  We have learned how to prove our work with both tape diagrams and also area models.  With this has also come the learning about what area is and how it works.  I find that the two are very easy to link together and an important part of what is needed to fully understand.

One suggestion I would like to make is that students memorize the times tables from 0x0 to 10x10.  While not a part of our math curriculum, the amount of multiplication done in all our units this means that if this basic work is in the memory, it takes away from the grunt of getting small calculations done.  This is best accomplished by verbally saying it out loud while reading it from a paper.

This week we are pleased to have a visiting storyteller at ISB who specializes in stories from West Africa.  We will be listening to him at an assembly on Tuesday and again in our next couple of library periods in the coming weeks.  This is a great way for students to learn about putting their own voice into their writing. This makes it more interesting for the reader.

daw.com - October 19

Due to holiday week, camp week and international day, it has been three weeks since I last sent you an update.  That could mean this one is a little longer than normal.

Camp was very successful even though it was also very unusual.  It is true that it started snowing within the first hour after we arrived and did not stop until around 2:00pm.  Do not get me wrong, this is not snow as in drifts of snow but rather light flakes falling.
The wind also caused the cold factor to increase so we had to make some last minute changes to the design for camp.  I do want to state for the record how proud I was of all the students given the changes that were all last minute and also the weather changes.  The were true outdoors people and just went with the flow.

Then on Friday of the same week we had international day and WOW did the class go to town over this.  Great national costumes or clothes to represent their own country and nationality.  We also had Mrs. Rane come in and talk about some of the customs of India.  Students then shared their own customs of both their family and also from their home country.  It was a great day and we all give our thanks to Mrs. Rane for organizing a great start to the day.  I really liked that I had incense smell in my room for the next 4-5 days.

This week we started our new unit on Globalization.  With this note there is a picture of the essential questions for this unit in case you want to know what we are going to study.  We started off the week by playing an altered version of Settlers of Catan where students learned how to trade and why it is so important to countries.  In the game they were to act like they were a country to them-selves.  The we spent some time looking at Good and Services and Producers and Consumers.  As we continue with this there are a number of simulations I will use to drive home the point of why globalization happened and both the positive and negative consequences.

We have started our next math unit on Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers and Decimals.  So far we have covered how to look at multiplication in both the regular algorithm and also in model form.  I have taught them about ribbon models and will start with area models next.  We are also doing a project called the Math Market that is part of this unit.

Our writing unit is looking at gathering evidence to use as part of a persuasive argument.  The entire class is using the idea of whether or not Chocolate Milk should be in schools as a subject and later on will choose a topic of their own to research and write about.  This is not a long unit but does pave the way to future essay writing in both grade 5 and for the rest of my students educational career.  It is an important start to this kind of writing.

I am really looking forward to meeting with all of you during Parent Teacher conferences next week.  It is a time when I can catch you up and also try to answer any burning questions you might have.  One thing I will ask is that you have your cell phones turned off during the time of our conference.  I really do not want any interruptions.  Please note that students are not to attend these conferences.  The student led conference will be later this year.

Please note that due to parent teacher conferences, there is no school for students on Monday and Tuesday.

We have had to put our elections on hold as we cannot break a tie without the one student who was absent on Friday.  As soon as I know I will be sure to let you know as well.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know right away.  I will gladly set up a time for us to meet.

daw.com - October 5

I do hope everyone has had a great break and that it was filled with fun and rest.  Now we are into our longest stretch of school - all the way to winter break.

This coming week’s big event is camp.  Here are some last minute reminders for everyone;
1.  Each student should have his passport brought to school on Monday.  In the case of students from Hong Kong, the HKID card is fine.  These will be returned to the students as they get off the bus upon returning to ISB on Wednesday.
2.  We will be back in time for the 2:35 bus departure on Wednesday.
3. Each student needs to have two packs with them.  A day pack with their lunch, snack, water bottle, hat, and raincoat in it.  We will cover all this in our final meeting with the class on Monday.  The other pack is for the rest of their gear.  Please help me remind students that we are only one for one night so all bags should be kept small.
4.  Students are not allowed to bring electronics with them.  Every year we have them go missing, broken, get wet etc., and all this does if bring unnecessary frustration and panic to the students.  Please leave them at home for the one night.
5.  Camp may be cancelled if the AQI is too high.  If this happens then the school will let parents know.  Unfortunately there is no way we can reschedule camp.

International day is on Friday and I would love to see everyone wear something that is representative of their home country.  If it is a special costume just for the parade in the afternoon, I will give students time to change before this event.  If any student is staying after school they must be accompanied by an adult.  They can be picked up at my room - 3504.  We have a bunch of cool things happening that day.

This week we will begin new units across the board.  Our unit of inquiry is Globalization where we will look at how trade and development have affected us and others around the globe.  Our writing unit is a research based argument/advocacy essay leading to a debate and our math unit is Multi-Digit Whole Number and Decimal Fractions Operations.  You can expect to start hearing about these as the week progresses.  I will have more information about these as we progress through them.

Students start swimming on Friday so they will need their swim suits and other things for this.   All these will be stored at the school until the end of the unit.

Please make sure you have signed up for Parent Teacher Conferences.  It is my only time this year that I get t meet with you and I really look forward to this.  There is no school for students on these two days.

Later in the week I will be sending home the assessment rubrics for the units on Global Citizenship, Math Unit 1 and Narrative Writing.  I am pleased with the outcomes but have noticed that deep thinking about a subject is something still missing.  We will continue to work on this throughout the year.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

daw.com - Sept. 21

First off are some nuts and bolts to make sure everyone is on the same page.   First, a letter about international day went home on Thursday and needs to be completed and returned to me by next Tuesday.  International Day is October 12th and I have to all the students into proper groups for the annual parade.  Then on Friday the letter and packing slip for camp went home.  Just a reminder that we are at camp from October 9 to October 10.  I have also included copies of these letters with this post.  Next week on Friday is the annual Terry Fox Run with one big change for high AQI days.  If the AQI is too high for the run to take place then the event is cancelled and we will do a short history in the classroom.  It will not be transferred to the dome as it has been in past years.  Please keep this in mind if you are planning on attending.  The time for the ES is 8:30-9:45 am if the run is a go.  It will be in the stadium on the west side of the campus.  Heres hoping that the weather and AQI are all in our favor.

This week we have spent some time looking at how we are good global citizens.  One of the topics that came up in class discussions is kindness.  We have spent some time learning about this, reading about people in this category and also looking at videos that show people doing acts of kindness.  We have also looked at projects that have been successful in other countries as people try to be better global citizens.  The class has started a fast attempt at what we could do to make ourselves better global citizens.  Next week we will also complete our final project which is an in depth look at someone who has demonstrated the values and beliefs of being a good global citizen.

We are at the end of our first writing unit on personal narratives.  The class is busy publishing these pieces and finishing all the revisions and edits.  I will have these assessed and out to them shortly after the October break.  Overall, I am quite pleased with the outcomes of these pieces.  I am really working with the students to improve the quality of the writing they do without increasing the quantity.  I do require them to revise and edit with three other people, twice in the process before something is published.  This is to make sure that others that read the writing understand it.

Our math unit is also coming to a close.  This week was all about division of decimals by whole numbers.  The idea was to show scholars how the division algorithm actually work and give them lots of chances to practice it.  One thing that students were not aware of is what actually happened when you bright down the next number - which is regrouping.  We also looked at why this all works without changing the actual question given.  The final assessment for this unit will most likely be on Wednesday of next week.

I am in the process of completing the first report card on student as a learner.  I believe these go out to you about the middle of October and then it will be the first Parent-Teacher conferences.  Please remember that if you ever want to ask questions about your student, I am more than willing to set up a time to meet with you.

It is now a long weekend so I wish all of you a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival weekend.

daw.com - Sept 14

This week we had a discussion in class about math and the future of what students will need to know for their math studies.  I did indicate to all students that math us one of two subjects that all high schools require for graduation - the other is Literature/Writing.  One of the processes we have studied that is super important for all students future math success is the basic multiplication tables up to 9 x 9 = 81.  I told them that if they were to memorize this it would make their future math one step easier since it is estimated that about 85% of all math in the future involves multiplication.  I then told them that the best way to memorize these is orally one at a time.  For most students, if they were to orally say the multiplication table every night for about 2 months, they would have memorized about 75-80% of it and one additional month will really make it stick - I remember my mom making me do this about grade 4-5 when I was in grade school and I still remember my multiplication tables quite well.  There is a copy of the multiplication table in the back of their student planners.  Not required, but something that will really make math more accessible in the future.

We are busy planning for our annual overnight which this year will be October 9-10 with Mrs. Silberstein’s class.  The trip will be to Singing Deer lodge.  One thing we will continue with is the no electronics (cameras, phones, iPods, iPads, tablets, computers, Digital Watches etc) policy.  There will be an emergency number supplied to all parents which can also be used in case of an emergency at camp.  The number of electronic devices that are damaged, destroyed, lost or stolen at camp is always an issue while we are there and since it is only a single night, it is felt that this policy should not be too hard to follow.  I have talked with the students in class and the only concern of theirs is photos.  While I do not have a complete solution for this, at this time all I can say is that we will bring our class set of iPads out and they are more than welcome to use these to take pictures with.  The safest and best place for personal electronics during camp is at home.  Please note that this is inline with the grade 4 and grade 6 overnight experiences.

I have had a chance to look through all your scholars MAP scores and there was nothing that stuck out in my mind or that really surprised me.  I expect that you will get your copy of the scores in the coming weeks now that the testing is completed here at ISB.  Please remember, it is a single snap shot that can have numerous external influences to it.  While it is quite reliable over time, the singularity of the test can be a factor given certain circumstances.  Once you receive your scores, you can contact the office of learning to get more information and interpretation of the scores.  The ones I get are different to yours as they are meant to help teachers decide what still needs to be taught in areas of LA, Math and Reading.

Next week we will begin the final project for the Global Citizenship Unit.  It is researching an very special global citizen and preparing a presentation about this person.  Lots of choice here and lots of neat information to gather.  We did an exercise this week looking a remarkable teens and their contribution to the world and their communities.  This was a great lead in to the final project next week.

We are also coming to end of our current math unit.  We are currently working on larger scale problems that reflect what we have learned.  This will be a great way for students to show their learning and also to prepare for the final assessment for this unit.

The next two weeks are 4 day weeks with Friday Sept 21 off and Monday Sept 24th off.  The it is a much deserved holiday for the October national holiday from Sept 29th to Oct 7th.  If anyone is planning on leaving early, please let me know so I can make sure that all the work is completed and assessments done.  If students miss these, they will have to find time after the holiday to complete them.  Thanks in advance for this.

That is all for this week.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.  I will gladly set up a time for us to meet.

daw.com - Sept. 7

This past week has seen the first of two MAP testing sessions.  It is a good view of the growth, over time, of the learning of your student.  It is not a good measure of grades for school.  These two ideas are mutually exclusive.  One of the things I talked to the students about is how some of the questions asked are really meant for an American audience.  The best example of this is the use of money where it talks about pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters - something not used in countries around the world.  I told them to do the best they could with these kinds of questions.  I expect that you should have the results of these tests in about 2-3 weeks.  I think they are emailed out to you from the office of learning.

We also had our first performance of the week with two songs done in rounds and also a dance called the sword dance.  It was a sight to behold when you consider that 7 classes and 140+ students all did this together.  I have a video of the event that you can see with this link.  Look for several more of these over the course of the year.

Still in the frame of performing arts, students need to bring in their recorders starting next week.  New students will be issued with one, if a student has lost their recorder there is a 50RMB fee for a new one.  This goes to Mrs. Campbell during music class and she will issue the new instrument.

This week students completed their first reading journal entry on Seesaw.  This is an assignment that lets me know what your child is thinking about as they read a book.  There is really no format to the entry other than to show their thinking about the book they are either reading now or have read recently.  Please remember that every student should be reading every night at home - no specific time, but some reading every night. Combined with the reading we do in class, this will show good growth and improvement in reading over the year.  If it is at all possible, students should read aloud twice a week as this is the only way the fluency can be improved.  We test the fluency of your student 3-4 times a year and develop strategies for teaching based on these results.

We have just about completed the drafts of our two small moment pieces.  Most students have had them revised and so this coming week we should be able to get them published.  After this I will be getting each student to choose one of their stories and create a book from it.  We will publish these as a class.  Some things we have looked at in this unit are transitioning from one idea to another, the specific use of time, writing from within the story and how the writing process works. It is amazing to see what the students have come up with and how they are expanding and enhancing their narratives.  There are still more lessons to come, but I am pleased with what I see so far.

This week we took a long look at beliefs and values.  We came up with our own definition and then looked at some CNN Heros - Young Wonders to see if their values matched with some that we came up with.  Next week we will create our first class video on our values and beliefs.  We will also begin to move on to the question; What influences people’s positions on global/civic issues?  This always brings up some interesting conversations so be prepared for these around the dinner table or at home.

During our library period this week we did a Breakout Challenge where the students had a two boxes with 4 keys on them.  To unlock the boxes students had to decipher clues they found.  All groups completed the challenge but there were several of the clues which were quite hard and took the groups longer than they expected.  I was pleased with the cooperation and collaboration shown to complete this challenge.  We are thinking of doing another one while at camp.

Speaking of camp, we will go to camp the week we get back from October break.  More information about this will be out in the next few weeks but we will leave on Tuesday morning and come back in time for busses on Wednesday afternoon.  Due to the number of students and classes, we can only go for one night this year.  Still, it is usually a highlight of the students year.  We will go to Singing Deer Lodge again this year.

In Math we are busy with the operations of decimal fractions having covered addition and subtraction and just started multiplication.  We are aiming to complete this unit prior to the October break.  So far, I have seen good learning from the students on this subject area and expect that to continue.  The biggest outcome from this is how to prove your answer.

That is it for now.  If you have any questions or concerns please let me know and I will gladly set up a time to meet with you.

daw.com - August 31

We have had another great week of learning in all the units of study as well as in some areas we just started to explore.  I have to admit that I am very proud of what is happening in class and how far we have come already.

First off, let’s remember it is MAP testing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week.  All I ask of you is that students get a good night’s sleep and have a hearty, but not too filling, breakfast.  All tests are done first thing in the morning right after our morning meeting activities.  I think we are doing the Reading Test on Monday, the Language Usage on Wednesday and the Math test on Friday but this still might change.  I expect that you will have the results about 3-4 weeks after the tests are over.

I want to thank everyone who came to Back to School Night.  As always, it was great to see you there and I hope you found the evening informative and worthwhile.  For some of you, it is the last one in the Elementary School.  I did have several parents ask me to share my blog of past teaching so here is the link.  It is a Google blog so you might need a VPN or link outside of China to view it.

You will find that it goes all the way back to 2009 when I was teaching grade 5 at HKIS.

I also want to thank Anica’s mom for volunteering to be the classroom mom.  She will be in touch with you in the next month for the activities and events of the year.  There were also two moms who volunteered to assist and I will pass these names on to Anica’s mom as needed.  Once again, thanks to everyone who can help out.  It does make the class just that much better.

I have had to answer a few questions this week about my home-learning program.  I thought I would take the time to do it in writing for everyone.  Each Monday (or first day of the week) a home-learning booklet goes home with the week’s activities.  There will be one problem and one reading learning sheet per night.  Please do not let anyone work on these for more than 40 minutes as that is what I think they should take.  Every morning we mark the home-learning as a class so that even if someone did not get it done, they can still learn from the answer shared with the class.  There is a challenge question that is optional but recommended.  Added to this will be the nightly Chinese homework and some reading to be done.  I do not assign a time to reading but I do ask all students to keep track of their reading in their reading journal.  I ask a parent to sign this once a week, so you can also keep track of your students reading at home.  I have talked with my students about this and feel that they should be able to do this all seven nights of the week.  That being said, I do realize it may not always be possible and that is OK.

Next Thursday at 2:45pm in gym 1 all the grade 5 students will be doing their first performance – the sword dance.  They have worked hard on this and I know they would love an audience if you can make it.  Please note that due to the large number of students, it is standing only around the edge of the gym.  There are no seats.  You are welcome to bring you camera to photo or video the event, but we do ask that you do not move among the students as this would distract them from their performance.

That is all I have for this week.  Enjoy the pics I have added to this announcement.  If anyone needs to meet with me, just send me an email I and I will arrange a time for us to meet.  Have a great weekend.
