Happy new year to everyone and welcome back to school for 2010. I hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas holiday and that Santa was good to all.

This week sees the start of two projects. First is our final project for our Pollution Unit. This is titled POLLUTION TALKS WITH 5C1. Each student will have to research a question about how students in Upper Primary can really make a difference in our damaged world. The format for this will be an essay and the project will be the students choice. All projects will be presented to other classes here in the UPS later in the month. Students will get a packet of info to get to work on and I have some videos to show the students of other presentations done by elementary students. Should be some neat outcomes here. This project is individual.

The second project is the non-fiction reading project. This one allows students to choose any topic they want to further research, complete some of the graphic organizers we have covered in class, conference with me and then create a presentation about this topic. Students can work together for this project. I will be covering this in reading class starting today.

Our homework resumes today and for the next few months, Wordly Wise (vocab) is replaced by grammar. We will start this week with nouns. In the coming weeks we will continue through the rest of the grade 5 grammar work. Each sheet of homework is related to the days teaching. The instructions are very specific.

We start unit 6 in math today which is addition and subtraction of fractions and the use of data. This is a fairly short unit that I expect to complete by next Friday.

Monday folders will go home today so please look over your students work carefully and return the folder with the parents signature in the next line. There is all the work from before Christmas and that includes the unit assessment for math unit 5.

Students go back to their regular library days this week and I am sure there are students with books to return. Remember that today is day 3. This will help students remember their book return day. They can also return books during morning and lunch recess and after school.

No pics this week unfortunately, but I will make a point of getting some for next week. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Harold Daw
